Yesterday's Roe v. Wade anniversary sparked some great blog posts and articles. Some of my favorites were Maggie's and the articles at Alternet's Reproductive Justice and Gender section. Maggie also mentioned me in today's post, so I'm feeling really flattered.
On a more sickening note, what a day for "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" to air an episode about someone who steals embryos from a fertility clinic. Not only that, but it's written so that the chief of police takes a special interest in the case because, you know, the 1 day old embryos are people too......only about 2 seconds gets given to the notion that using the term "murder" to describe letting the frozen embryos thaw (and therefore cease to be viable) is totally ridiculous. Way to go, NBC......**head-desk, head-desk**
A lot of crazoids are trying to claim that the death of an embryo or foetus is murder. What's the next step? Will a miscarriage that happens naturally be involuntary manslaughter? How about stillbirth? This is a scary effing precedent....

In music news, I always complain about not getting work. It seems, though, that when I do, it's a flood. I got a call the other night from one of the small opera companies around here, offering me a small role. Rehearsals start immediately and go through the end of February. Shows go into March, after which I've got a couple of weeks and then 2 concerts, almost back to back....oy.....
I hope you have a lovely Wednesday.

orpheus in the underworld with pocket opera.....we'll see.
I think I need to download that episode of Law and Order. I watched like a whole season of that show when I first moved to Chicago and it scared the crap out of me! I actually blogged about the factual inaccuracies of that show once upon a time. Looks like I'll have to do it again.
hey, Cortney, thanks for checking out my new blog.
I would be really interested to read your thoughts on this episode.
I taped the episode but haven't watched it yet. Now I'm not so sure...
Was I the only one who noticed the aptness of talking about Roe and embryos? (Don't hit me.)
The thing is, there are several steps to conception, all of which can (and more often than not) do go awry. It's not just "egg meets sperm, bingo, human being". To produce a viable embryo takes implantation and other chemical processes, and at the end of that, if the embryo "matures", the egg must die.
I don't understand folks who think g*d would implant a soul and consciousness into tissue going through that kind of hit or miss trauma, with a more than 75% failure rate. But rationality isn't actually a big part of their argument. It's about faith over intellect, and in particular, they fear g*d more than they love her.
Yeah, Maggie, if you watch the episode I worry that you'd injure yourself by bashing your head repeatedly against a wall or something. It was really unpleasant to watch (why didn't I turn it off, you ask? couldn't tell ya....)
Was it the article on Pandagon, maybe, where the comments had quite a few notes from women who had had miscarriages. Many of them said that people told them they had "a little guardian angel" or something....quite creepy.
