Henceforth, It Is Decreed That Neil Patrick Harris Should ALWAYS Sing

Friday, December 5, 2008

This is no surprise. He was in Rent. But since this summer's "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" I've been totally digging Neil Patrick Harris as a musical theater genius. This doesn't disappoint.

I loved seeing Lake Bell again (she was in a great sci-fi show last year, about underwater critters, that got cancelled). Even better was that cheesy wig Jack Black is wearing -- appropriate for the "whitification" of Jeezus that the Christianists do. When, as my mother informed me when I was 9, he almost certainly had black kinky hair, dark skin, black eyes, and big honker of a nose. Every other depiction is racist drag.

Well, I think what happens is that each Christian culture depicts biblical folks, particularly Jesus, in a way that makes them look as much like that culture's population as possible. If I remember my art history correctly, it's done on purpose, to make Christianity as approachable and universal, or something.

I don't think it's necessarily racist, because European cultures may draw a very white Jesus (which, you're right, is not remotely plausible), but Eastern Orthodox, Coptic and African churches will draw darker skin, black hair....I don't know anything about Central/South American churches, but I'd imagine that they might depict Jesus in a way that looks familiar. (Correct me if I'm wrong, please, because I'm making a huge assumption).

Historically, there was probably more ignorance than anything else in the depiction. If it's 1500 and you live in Northern Germany, the chances of you ever having met anyone from anywhere other than Northern Germany are pretty slim. Isn't the statistic that up until pretty recently, most people didn't usually travel more than 5 miles from their birthplace?

I hadn't ever heard of Lake Bell, so I had to IMDB her. Turns out I've seen her in loads of stuff, but never knew her name.
