At the risk of confusing my non-musician or non-classically-minded readers, I'd like to share a few things that one should NEVER say to a classical singer:

"You should go on American Idol!"

"Do you sing like this: *cue wobbly weird sound that crosses Tarzan with Julia Child*?"

"Oh, you sing Renaissance and Baroque music? Have you ever sing at the Renaissance faire?"
(This one could also be "Do you wear garb?" which is also forbidden)

"You're an opera singer? Like, you mean Phantom of the Opera?"

"You're an opera singer? But you're not fat!"

I know that I've heard others, but this is a basic list of things that will probably annoy or offend a classical singer. Please make a note.

I'm off to Seattle this afternoon for the Accademia d'Amore/Seattle Academy of Baroque Opera workshop. I'll be there ten days, then I head out to the outskirts of the city to my cousin's house for several days, where I'll put my child-wrangling skills to good use.

There won't be any kind of computer lab at the workshop, so since I don't have a laptop, I will probably not get to blog or email much. I'm not sure what I'll do without internet....I might have to actually talk to people! Gasp!

In the meantime, if you need to imagine a patented Kat rant, how bout this: Olympic Cheerleaders.
Yep, they exist, but you don't see them on TV. Apparently people raised a stink after the last games, so instead of getting rid of the cheerleaders, they just hid them from the TV viewing public. This asswipe blogger thinks that we should see more of them. You may fill in the rest of the rant yourself, cuz I have to go pack (did I mention that I leave in 1.5 hours??! Ack!).

Huzzah of a more personal nature:

After having heard nothing from the powers that be at Philharmonia Baroque, even though all my friends had, I finally found out that I've been offered a gig with them! The auditions were for substitute spots, not for the whole season, but still. I'll be singing their April 2009 concert: Handel's Wicked Queen (Athalia).

Yay!

I was getting frustrated this season that I wasn't singing enough, and that I have had so many unsuccessful auditions. Let's hope that this is the tide turning, and that I'll get more and more!!

I suppose it's good to blog about happy things, sometimes, right? Not just whatever is pissing me off!
